Hottest skills for 2009

Source: ComputerWorld

US-based Computerworld says that despite the grim financial picture, demand for certain types of IT skills remains strong – and that some CIOs are building this know-how internally (ie through training) as hiring freezes become more common.

The hottest skills, according to Computerworld's annual Forecast survey, are:

  • Programming/application development, particularly in SAP or .Net
  • Help desk/technical support, particularly for people who offer a blend of deep technical expertise and solid customer-service abilities
  • Project management; apparently employers want people with project management certification, even at the vice president level.
  • Networking, including specialists with implementation experience in the convergence of voice, e-mail, video, instant messaging and other communications systems
  • Business intelligence, including people with data mining, data warehousing and data management skills
  • Security, including those with skills in SAP security, network and wireless security, and those with Certified Information Systems Security Professional accreditation.
  • Web 2.0
  • Data center projects, and particularly server and storage virtualization
  • Telecommunications, with VoIP and projects involving unified communications continuing to drive demand for blended telecommunications and networking skills.
